Obesity has been considered as one of the major problems around the world because obesity is a big problem in itself that leads to various kinds of other diseases. Hence obesity is one of the biggest problems around the world that leads to fatal diseases and related forms of mental difficulties also. Basically obesity is a situation in which the amount of fat built up and stored in the body crosses the healthy limits and if these fat stores exceed the healthy limits then the condition is termed as obesity. There are various levels of obesity also and there are several methods used to test for obesity.

But it should be remembered that obesity is a dangerous disease and it has various kinds of side effects. Obesity can affect the mind and body of the person and results in various kinds of ailments also. There is various health risks caused due to obesity and these include diseases like diabetes, arthritis, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, stroke, and some forms of cancer also. Most of these diseases are caused as the result of stress due to carrying around extra weight and this usually has unfavorable effects on the body.

These problems can be corrected with diet and exercise to get rid of obesity but in stages of morbid obesity there are usually other solutions like operations that are implemented too. Researches have shown that obesity can lead to sudden death from heart diseases and this happens due to putting extra stress on the heart and the result is an overworked heart. This overworked heart is responsible for an increase in blood pressure and angina and thus it is not unusual for someone who is obese to fight with high blood pressure and greater cholesterol levels.

None of the symptoms of obesity are healthy and if you are suffering from the same then it is best to implement for sorting out these problems. A major side effect of obesity is diabetes and it has been seen that obese people are twice as likely to generate diabetes as compared to those who are not overweight. They usually suffer from type 2 diabetes, which can lead to problems like heart disease and stroke. The solution here again is increase in physical activity and healthy combinations of food.

It has been seen that obesity increases the chances of osteoarthritis and this happens because the excess body weight puts more pressure on the joint cartilage. As a result the joint most frequently affected is the knee and with weight loss the joint pain associated with obesity-onset osteoarthritis can also be reduced. Another problem suffered by obese people is a condition where a person stops breathing for short periods of time while they are sleeping and this is also known as sleep apnea.

It should be remembered that obesity can also lead to mental problems like loss of self esteem and self confidence and thus curing obesity is the only solution to the same. There are various modes of getting rid of obesity and the healthiest options here are exercising and eating healthy.

Obesity - Not a Matter

Obesity has become a growing epidemic that plaques people of different cultures worldwide. Obesity is such a major health concern because it leads to several fatal diseases. Obesity sufferers are prone to cardiovascular problems, diabetes, stroke and heart attack. Many of these health issues are called “silent-killers” because the victim does not even know they have these diseases. Obesity is not only negatively affecting adults but it affects the younger generation as well. Children and teenagers are becoming obese at alarming rates. It is said that if this trend continues our children’s generation will not live as long as their parents. This is a serious fact that is terrifying on every level. Obesity does not discriminate as it takes out so many in its path. Obesity is preventable.
The leading cause of obesity is the intake of caloric food consumed being more than the output of energy the body exerts in a day. Our intake of food must match our output of energy. If these two numbers do not correspond then fat cells multiply and make a home in the tissues of the body. Once this occurs a person is on a dangerous path leading to obesity. Other causes of obesity are a sedentary lifestyle, a decrease in physical activities and manual labor. We live in a technological revolution. Gadgets make everyday tasks easier and therefore we have to exert less energy. This is a negative influence though, because it leads to the onset of obesity and severe health problems.
Obesity is calculated by estimating an individual’s Bobdy Mass Index. A BMI test is a proven way to calculate obesity and its chance of occurrence. A BMI test calculates and divides a person’s weight by their height. This gives a percentage and alerts the person to their rate and chance of being obese. An above normal BMI percentage is twenty-five percent or higher of a normal body weight. Many Americans fall into this category, causing America, to become a nation of obese people.
There are many treatment options for people who are suffering from obesity. The best treatment is for an obese individual to decrease their calorie intake, to decrease their fat consumption, to only use clinically proven obesity treatment product, to become more active and to participate in physical manual labor. All of these factors form a winning therapy in order to fight obesity . Many people will try weight loss pills, whether prescribed or herbal, but they only work in conjunction with a healthy diet and vigorous exercise program. People using these pills should be reminded of their serious side effects. Obese people also have the choice to have surgery performed but this option is usually only used in severe cases.
It used to be that obese people were looked towards as signs of strength and fertility. Today obese people are stereotyped as they are considered to be lazy and dull minded. These two factors are far from the truth. Obesity is a huge that problem that keeps getting bigger. People’s waistlines are rapidly growing and this is leading to a lifetime of health problems. The sad thing is that obesity affects one generation after another. This is a raging epidemic that calls for stricter government regulations and a greater sense of personal responsibility. Obesity can be stopped in its tracks and prevented.

How Obesity Causes Diabetes: Not a Tall Tale

The epidemic of obesity-associated diabetes is a major crisis in modern societies, in which food is plentiful and exercise is optional. The biological basis of this problem has been explored from evolutionary and mechanistic perspectives. Evolutionary theories, focusing on the potential survival advantages of “thrifty” genes that are now maladaptive, are of great interest but are inherently speculative and difficult to prove. Mechanistic studies have revealed numerous fat-derived molecules and a link to inflammation that, together, are hypothesized to underlie the obesity-diabetes connection and thereby represent prospective targets for therapeutic intervention.

Childhood Obesity - Prevention Programs

The epidemic of obesity in American Indian communities and the need for childhood obesity-prevention programs

Mary Story, Marguerite Evans, Richard R Fabsitz, Theresa E Clay, Bonnie Holy Rock and Brenda Broussard
American Indians of all ages and both sexes have a high prevalence of obesity. The high prevalence of diabetes mellitus in American Indians shows the adverse effects that obesity has in these communities. Obesity has become a major health problem in American Indians only in the past 1–2 generations and is believed to be associated with the relative abundance of high-fat foods and the rapid change from active to sedentary lifestyles. Intervention studies are urgently needed in American Indian communities to develop and test effective strategies for weight reduction. The poor success rate of adult obesity treatment programs in the general population points to the need to develop prevention approaches aimed toward children. Because eating and physical activity practices are formed early in life and may be carried into adulthood, prevention programs that encourage increased physical activity and healthful eating habits targeted toward young people need to be developed and tested. To be most effective, interventions must be developed with full participation of the American Indian communities.

What is overweight and obesity?

Overweight and obesity are defined as ''abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health''.

Measuring overweight and obesity

It is difficult to develop one simple index for the measurement of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents because their bodies undergo a number of physiological changes as they grow. Depending on the age, different methods to measure a body's healthy weight are available:

For children aged 0-5 years

The WHO Child Growth Standards, launched in April 2006, include measures for overweight and obesity for infants and young children up to age 5.
  • For individuals aged 5-19 years
WHO developed the Growth Reference Data for 5-19 years. It is a reconstruction of the 1977 National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)/WHO reference and uses the original NCHS data set supplemented with data from the WHO child growth standards sample for young children up to age 5.
  • For Adults

The most commonly used measure for overweight and obesity is the Body Mass Index (BMI) - a simple index to classify overweight and obesity in adult populations and individuals. It is defined as the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters (kg/m2).
The BMI is the same for both sexes and for all ages of adults. However, it should be considered as a rough guide because it may not correspond to the same body fat percentage in different individuals. This BMI-chart is not yet usable for children.

Obesity in Children

Obesity means having too much body fat. It is different from being overweight, which means weighing too much. Both terms mean that a person's weight is greater than what is considered healthy for his or her height. Children grow at different rates, so it isn't always easy to know when a child is obese or overweight. Ask your doctor to measure your child's height and weight to determine if he or she is in a healthy range.
If a weight loss program is necessary, involve the whole family in healthy habits so your child doesn't feel singled out. You can encourage healthy eating by serving more fruits and vegetables and buying fewer sodas and high-calorie, high-fat snack foods. Physical activity can also help your child overcome obesity or being overweight. Kids need about 60 minutes each day.

Childhood overweight and obesity on the rise

Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. The problem is global and is steadily affecting many low- and middle-income countries, particularly in urban settings. The prevalence has increased at an alarming rate. Globally, in 2010 the number of overweight children under the age of five, is estimated to be over 42 million. Close to 35 million of these are living in developing countries.
Overweight and obese children are likely to stay obese into adulthood and more likely to develop noncommunicable diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases at a younger age. Overweight and obesity, as well as their related diseases, are largely preventable. Prevention of childhood obesity therefore needs high priority.

Bicycling A Good Exercise?
Yes, riding a bicycle is great exercise. It can help you get in shape and lose weight, and it can reduce the risk of health problems such as heart attacks. Bicycling puts less strain on your joints than jogging does, so bicycling is easier on your body.

Drink plenty of water : Our body needs a lot of water so give in to water. Water is not just way to flush out toxin but if you have more water in your body you will generally feel healthier and fitter. This it self will discourage any tendency to gorge. The best thing about water is that is has no calories at all.

Start your day with a glass of water As soon as you wake up, gulp down a glass of Normal water. It’s a wonderful way to start you day and you only need a lesser quantity of your breakfast drink after that. A glass of water lets out all your digestive juices and sort of lubricates the insides of your body. You may have your morning cup of tea but have it after a glass of water. It is good for you.
Drink a glass of water before you start the meal. Water naturally needs some space so that you feel fuller without actually having to stuff yourself.
Have another glass of water while you are having the meal. Again this is another great how to lose weight fast super tip and a way of making yourself full, another great weight loss tips, so that you can actually rise from the table eating less but feeling full just the same. Instead of drinking it one gulp, take sips after each morsel. It will help the food to settle faster so that you get that feeling that you are full faster. SIDENOTE: Water is such a remarkable thing, but seldom do we give it the credit that it deserves. Did you know that over 66% of your body weight is nothing but water’ It’s amazing! Water also plays a vital role in weight control, which is why I donated so much space to it, above.
Stay away from sweetened bottle drinks, especially sodas. Hey all those colas and fizzy drinks are sweetened with sugar and sugar means calories. The more you can cut out on these sweetened bottle drinks, the better for you. So if you must drink sodas, then stick to diet sodas.
Include in your diet things that contain more water like tomatoes and watermelons. These things contain 90 to 95 % water so that there is nothing that you have to lose by feasting on them. They fill you up without adding to the pounds.

Eat fresh fruit instead of drinking fruit juice. Juice is often sweetened but fresh fruits have natural sugars. When you eat fruit, you are taking in a lot of fiber, which is needed by the body, and fruits of course are an excellent source of vitamins.
If you do have a craving for fruit juice then go for fresh fruit juice instead of these that contain artificial flavors and colors. Or even better, try making your own fruit juice taking care not to sweeten it with too many calories.
Choose fresh fruit to processed fruits. Processed and canned fruits do not have as much fiber as fresh fruit and processed and canned fruits are nearly always sweetened.
Increase your fiber intake. Like I mentioned, the body needs a lot of fiber. So try to include in your diet as many fruits and vegetables as you can.
Go crazy on vegetables. Vegetables are your best bet when it comes to how to lose weight fast. Nature has a terrific spread when it comes to choosing vegetables. And the leafy green vegetables are your best bet. Try to include a salad in you diet always.
Eat intelligently. The difference between man and beast is that we are driven by intelligence while beasts are driven by instinct. Don’t just eat something because you feel like eating it. Ask you’re self whether your body really needs it.
Watch what you eat. Keep a watchful eye on every thing that goes in. Sometimes the garnishes can richer than the food itself. Accompaniments too can be very rich. Remember that it is the easiest thing in the world to eat something without realizing that it was something that you should not have eaten. Selective memory you know’
Control that sweet tooth. Remember that sweet things generally mean more calories. It is natural that we have cravings for sweet things especially chocolates and other confectionary. Take this weight loss tips seriously and go easy on theses things and each time you consume something sweet understand that it is going to add on somewhere.
Fix times to have meals and stick to it. Try to have food at fixed times of the day. You can stretch these times by half an hour, but anything more than that is going to affect your eating pattern, the result will either be a loss of appetite or that famished feeling which will make you stuff yourself with more than what is required the next time you eat.
Eat only when you are hungry. Bonus how to lose weight fast tips here–> (make sure you are not just thirsty!) Some of us have the tendency to eat whenever we see food. We use parties as an excuse to stuff our selves. Understand that the effect of a whole week of dieting can be wasted by just one day’s party food. Whenever you are offered something to eat do not decline it completely bit just break of a nibble so that you appear to mind your manners and at the same time can watch your diet.
Quit snacking in between meals. Do not fall for snacks in between meals. This is especially true for those who have to travel a lot. They feel that the only time they can get a bite to eat is snacks and junk food. The main problem with most snacks and junk food is that they are usually less filling and contain a lot of fat and calories. Just think about French fries tempting but terribly fattening.
Snack on vegetables if you must. You might get the pangs of hunger in between meals. It is something that you can very well control. Or even better, try munching on carrots. They are an excellent way to satisfy those hungry pangs and are good for your eyes and teeth. True, you might end up being called Bugs Bunny, but its miles better to be called Bugs Bunny than fatso.
Go easy on tea and coffee. Tea and coffee are harmless by themselves. It’s when you add the cream and sugar that they become fattening. Did you know that having a cup of tea or coffee that has cream and at least two cubes of sugar is as bad as having a big piece of rich chocolate cake’
Try to stick to black tea/coffee. Black tea or coffee can actually be good for you. But personally I would like to recommend tea rather than coffee. The caffeine in the coffee is not really good for you because it is an alkaloid and can affect other functions of your body like the metabolism.
Count the calories as you eat. To lose weight fast it’s a good idea to have an idea of the calories that most food items have. If it is a packed thing then the label is sure to have the calories that the substance has.
Be sure to burn out those extra calories by the end of the week. If you feel that you have consumed more calories than you should have during the week, it happens you know, and then make sure that you work off those extra calories by the end of the week.
Stay away from fried things. Fried things are an absolute no-no. The more fried things that you avoid, the lesser weight you will gain. Fried things are called so because they are fried in oil or fat. And even if the external oil is drained away, there is still a lot of hidden oil in it so stay away from it.
Do not skip meals. The worst thing you can do while watching you diet is skip a meal. It has just the opposite effect of what you want. You need to have at least four regular meals every day.
